WebAug 28, 2006 · Berkeley's philosophical view is often described as an argument for “immaterialism”, by which is meant a denial of the existence of matter (or more precisely, material substance). But he also, famously, argued in support of three further theses. He argued for idealism, the thesis that mind constitutes the ultimate reality. WebThe grounds on which idealism is advocated are generally grounds derived from the theory of knowledge, that is to say, from a discussion of the conditions which things must satisfy in order that we may be able to know them. The first serious attempt to establish idealism on such grounds was that of Bishop Berkeley.
